Door Replacement Across Exeter's Property Types

A door works harder than most homeowners realise. It's the first line of defence against Exeter's south-west weather - the rain, the wind and the damp that rolls in off Dartmoor from autumn through to spring. When a door seal fails or a frame warps, the draught is usually the first thing you notice, followed by higher heating bills and, eventually, condensation around the frame. By the time many Exeter homeowners call us, they've been putting up with a draughty door for longer than they should have.

We work across all parts of Exeter - from the Victorian terraces in St Thomas and Heavitree where original timber door frames are finally giving up, to newer estates in Pinhoe and Alphington where uPVC doors from the late 1990s are starting to show their age. We also handle front door replacements in conservation areas where the style and material of any new door has to be appropriate to the street. Topsham and the Cathedral Close area are both places where we get regular enquiries and where getting the right product matters.

All our door installations are covered by our 10-year workmanship guarantee and are FENSA registered where glazing is included. We provide a written quote after every survey - no verbal-only pricing and no additions to the bill on the day of fitting.

Door Types We Install In Exeter

We install all the main door styles across Exeter. Here's a breakdown of the options and what each one is best suited to.

Black composite front door on stone steps - composite door installation in Exeter

Composite Doors

Composite doors are now the most popular choice for front doors across Exeter. They have a solid timber core wrapped in glass-reinforced plastic, which gives them the look and feel of a real timber door without any of the maintenance. They don't warp, they don't swell in the wet and they don't need painting. In Exeter's climate, where south-westerly rain drives hard against front elevations from October through April, that resistance to moisture matters. A composite door fitted properly will hold its shape and its seal for decades.

We supply composite doors in a wide range of colours - classic black, heritage green, anthracite grey, red and more - with a choice of glazing inserts and hardware finishes. Popular in St Leonard's, Pennsylvania and the smarter Victorian terraces in Heavitree where the front door makes a statement. Prices typically run from £800 to £1,800 fitted.

Brick house with coloured uPVC door - door installation in Exeter

uPVC Doors

uPVC doors are a practical, cost-effective option for both front and back doors across Exeter. They're particularly popular as back door replacements, where the main requirements are security, weatherproofing and low maintenance rather than aesthetics. A uPVC door with a multi-point locking system provides solid security at a lower price point than composite. Also widely fitted as front doors on post-war estates in Whipton, Pinhoe and Exwick.

Available in white, grey, anthracite and woodgrain finishes. We fit uPVC doors with multi-point locks as standard - single-point locks that engage only at the handle are not something we'd recommend on any external door. Prices typically run from £600 to £1,200 fitted.

French doors opening to outdoor seating area - French door installation in Exeter

French Doors

French doors are popular for kitchen-diner extensions and rear reception rooms across Exeter - particularly on Victorian terraces and semis in St Thomas, Heavitree and Newtown where rear extensions have created open-plan spaces that benefit from a direct connection to the garden. They open from the centre, providing a wide opening with an unobstructed view when both leaves are open.

We supply and fit French doors in uPVC and aluminium frames, with toughened safety glass as standard. Multi-point locking on both leaves is available. French doors suit Exeter's mild south-west climate well - the garden is genuinely usable for more months of the year here than further east in England.

Cottage with green stable door - stable door installation in Exeter

Stable Doors

Stable doors - split horizontally so the top and bottom halves can be opened independently - are a practical choice for kitchen and utility room back doors, particularly in properties with young children or pets. The top half can be opened for ventilation while the bottom half stays closed. They suit the character of older Devon properties particularly well and are popular in villages surrounding Exeter.

We install stable doors in composite and timber, in a range of colours. In Topsham and on the rural edges of Exeter, a traditionally styled stable door in a heritage colour - cottage green, farmhouse blue or a deep red - looks genuinely right against older stonework or brick. We'll advise on what's appropriate and what planning constraints apply.

Why Replace Your Door Now

A worn door costs more than you might think - in heat loss, in security risk and in the ongoing nuisance of a door that doesn't work properly.

Stop heat leaving through the door

A poorly sealing door is one of the biggest sources of heat loss in an Exeter home. A new composite or uPVC door with a proper multi-point seal makes an immediate difference to comfort and bills.

Upgraded security

Modern multi-point locking systems engage at three or more points around the frame. Old single-point latches - common on doors fitted before 2000 - offer minimal resistance to a determined break-in.

No maintenance required

Composite and uPVC doors don't need painting, sanding or sealing. In Exeter's wet climate, a timber door needs attention every couple of years or it deteriorates. Modern materials simply don't.

Draught-free operation

A new door fitted with proper compression seals eliminates the draught that worn-out door seals allow. The difference is noticeable on first use - particularly in winter when wind is coming from the south-west.

Kerb appeal and value

A front door is one of the most visible parts of any Exeter property. A new composite door in the right colour lifts the look of a whole house front and adds measurable value at the point of sale.

Proper certification

FENSA certification is issued on completion for all glazed door replacements. When you come to sell, this is exactly what your solicitor will ask for. Having it in place avoids complications at conveyancing.

Our Door Installation Process

A typical door replacement takes a day or less. Here's what happens from first contact to finished job.

1

Free site visit

We visit, measure the opening, check the frame condition and discuss your options. Takes 20-30 minutes and tells us everything we need to quote accurately.

2

Written quote - itemised, no surprises

You receive a written itemised quote covering the door, frame, hardware, fitting and waste removal. The figure doesn't change when the day comes.

3

Door manufactured to measure

The door and frame are made to the exact measurements taken on survey. Old Exeter houses rarely have standard-sized openings.

4

Old door removed carefully

We remove the existing door and frame without damaging surrounding brickwork or internal plasterwork. Any damage is made good before fitting.

5

New door fitted and sealed

The frame is fitted level, plumb and secure. The door is hung and adjusted so it sits square in the frame. Internal and external sealing is completed properly.

6

Hardware adjusted and tested

Every lock, handle and hinge is adjusted and tested. We make sure the door opens, closes and locks correctly before we consider the job complete.

7

Final inspection - FENSA certificate issued

We walk through the finished job with you and hand over your FENSA certificate before we leave. The site is left clean and tidy.

Our Guarantee

Every window and door we install is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. That covers the fitting itself - how the frame sits in the opening, how it's sealed, how the hardware operates. If anything we've done causes a problem within ten years, we come back and fix it.

The glazing units themselves also carry a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee against seal failure and condensation between the panes. Both guarantees are issued in writing on completion of the job, alongside your FENSA certificate. When you come to sell, your solicitor will ask for these documents - we make sure you have everything you need.

The guarantee only stands if the product is correctly installed. That's why we don't rush surveys, we don't cut corners on preparation, and we don't send crews who don't know what they're doing. The guarantee is only as good as the quality of the work behind it.

What To Look For In A Door Installer In Exeter

The most important thing is that someone comes to the property before a price is agreed. Door openings in Exeter's older housing stock are frequently non-standard - Victorian terraces in Heavitree and St Thomas were built before any standardisation, and the openings vary by an inch or more in both height and width. A door quoted from a photo or from approximate measurements supplied over the phone is almost certainly going to be the wrong size. The surveyor needs to measure the opening in at least three places and check it for square before any order is placed.

FENSA registration is important for glazed doors just as it is for windows. Any external door that includes glass panels is classed as a replacement glazed unit under building regulations and must be certified accordingly. A FENSA-registered installer self-certifies the work and registers it with the scheme - you receive a certificate that proves the work meets current regulations. Without it, you'd need a local authority building notice and inspection. When you sell, your solicitor will ask for it. A company that can't provide FENSA certification is telling you something about how seriously they take the regulatory side of the work.

On product quality, the key things to check are the locking system and the glazing spec. Multi-point locking should be standard on any external door - not an upgrade. Look for at least three locking points engaging around the frame when the door is locked. For glazed panels, A-rated double glazing is the minimum you should accept. Toughened safety glass should be standard in all door panels at or near ground level. Composite doors should have a solid core - a door that feels light is usually a door with a lower-quality foam core that won't perform as well thermally or hold its shape over time in Exeter's damp conditions.

"Just under half the door enquiries we receive in Exeter are from homeowners whose current door is draughty rather than broken - a worn seal is often the cause, but it's usually cheaper to replace the whole door."

What Exeter Customers Say About Our Door Installations

Genuine feedback from homeowners across Exeter and the surrounding area

"Had all eight windows replaced in our 1970s house in Heavitree. The team arrived on time, laid dust sheets throughout and were done in two days. Biggest difference is the warmth - no more draught across the living room floor in January. Really happy with the whole job."

Karen T. — Heavitree, Exeter

"I got three quotes. These were the only company who actually came out and measured properly before pricing - the others just asked for the number of windows and gave me a number over the phone. The price was competitive and the job was done cleanly. Would use again without hesitation."

Mark R. — Topsham

"Secondary glazing fitted throughout our listed cottage near the Cathedral Close. They knew the planning restrictions before I'd even finished explaining and recommended exactly the right product. The noise reduction from the road is noticeable immediately. Brilliant from start to finish."

Sarah M. — St Leonard's, Exeter

"Composite front door replaced after the old one warped and stopped sealing properly. The new door is solid, the fitting is neat and they took the old door away. Got our FENSA certificate in the post a few days later. Exactly what you want - no fuss, job done."

David H. — Pinhoe, Exeter

"Bi-fold doors fitted to the rear of our extension in St Thomas. The difference to the kitchen is incredible - it feels like a completely different room when they're open onto the garden. The team were tidy, professional and explained everything clearly throughout. Top marks."

Claire W. — St Thomas, Exeter

Common Questions About Door Installation In Exeter

How long does door installation take in Exeter?

A standard front or back door replacement takes half a day to a full day. You'll have a working, secure door by the end of the same day in almost every case.

Do I need planning permission to replace a door in Exeter?

In most cases, no. If your property is listed or in a conservation area - Topsham, Cathedral Close and parts of the city centre - you may need approval for any visible change. We'll advise during the survey.

What types of doors do you install in Exeter?

Composite, uPVC, timber, French, stable and patio doors. We cover all areas of Exeter and can advise on what's appropriate for your property type and budget.

Is a composite door worth the extra cost over uPVC?

For a front door, usually yes. Better thermal performance, more solid feel, more traditional appearance and no warping over time. uPVC makes sense for back and side doors where cost matters more than aesthetics.

How much does a new door cost in Exeter?

uPVC doors typically run from £600 to £1,200 fitted. Composite doors from around £800 to £1,800. We provide written itemised quotes after every survey.

Are your door installations FENSA registered?

Yes. All glazed door replacements comply with current building regulations and we provide FENSA certification on completion. Important for your home records and for conveyancing.
