About Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot is a market town 16 miles south of Exeter on the A380, sitting at the head of the Teign estuary where it meets the edge of Dartmoor. It has run a market since the 13th century and remains a busy commercial hub for south Devon - the weekly pannier market, Newton Abbot Racecourse and good rail connections on the mainline to Plymouth and London give the town a different character to the smaller coastal resorts nearby.
The interwar housing built from the 1920s through to the late 1930s is the defining window installation issue in Newton Abbot. The town expanded significantly during that period, and the semi-detached houses and terraces built during those years were almost universally fitted with steel-framed Crittall-style windows - slim metal frames with small opening casements set within a fixed surround. They were fashionable and practical at the time, but they are now approaching a century old. Most have rusted, corroded and seized over the decades, the putty holding the glass has long since failed, and the frames provide almost no thermal resistance. Draughts through Newton Abbot's interwar semis in winter can be significant.
Newton Abbot also has Victorian terraces in the town centre, a large stock of post-war council housing that has passed into private ownership, and newer developments on the edges of town. Each has its own window profile and its own set of issues. We carry out a lot of work across the full range of Newton Abbot's housing - from Victorian terraces on the streets near the station to newer builds on the outskirts.

The Benefits Of New Windows In Newton Abbot
For Newton Abbot's interwar housing stock with original steel frames, replacing the windows brings immediate and significant improvements that go well beyond aesthetics.
- Crittall steel frames provide almost no thermal insulation - replacing with A-rated double glazing makes an immediate and noticeable difference to the warmth of the house
- Draught elimination - the failure of original putty and the corrosion of steel frames creates significant air gaps that new sealed frames close completely
- Significant reduction in heating bills - the energy savings from going from single-glazed steel frames to A-rated double glazing are among the largest available from any single home improvement
- No more maintenance - corroded steel frames need regular treatment to prevent further deterioration. uPVC requires nothing beyond an occasional wipe-down
- Modern multipoint locking on replacement frames is a major security improvement over the basic catches original to 1930s window frames
Our Guarantee
Every window and door we install is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. That covers the fitting itself - how the frame sits in the opening, how it's sealed, how the hardware operates. If anything we've done causes a problem within ten years, we come back and fix it.
The glazing units themselves also carry a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee against seal failure and condensation between the panes. Both guarantees are issued in writing on completion of the job, alongside your FENSA certificate. When you come to sell, your solicitor will ask for these documents - we make sure you have everything you need.
The guarantee only stands if the product is correctly installed. That's why we don't rush surveys, we don't cut corners on preparation, and we don't send crews who don't know what they're doing. The guarantee is only as good as the quality of the work behind it.

New frames fitted and sealed
Set level and plumb, packed and sealed internally and externally for a draught-free installation.

Final inspection - FENSA certificate issued

"Newton Abbot has a high proportion of interwar semis - properties of that age often still have steel-framed Crittall-style windows that are now approaching a century old and causing real problems for homeowners."

What Newton Abbot Customers Say
Genuine feedback from homeowners across Exeter and the surrounding area
"Had all eight windows replaced in our 1970s house in Heavitree. The team arrived on time, laid dust sheets throughout and were done in two days. Biggest difference is the warmth - no more draught across the living room floor in January. Really happy with the whole job."
Karen T. — Heavitree, Exeter
"I got three quotes. These were the only company who actually came out and measured properly before pricing - the others just asked for the number of windows and gave me a number over the phone. The price was competitive and the job was done cleanly. Would use again without hesitation."
Mark R. — Topsham
"Secondary glazing fitted throughout our listed cottage near the Cathedral Close. They knew the planning restrictions before I'd even finished explaining and recommended exactly the right product. The noise reduction from the road is noticeable immediately. Brilliant from start to finish."
Sarah M. — St Leonard's, Exeter
"Composite front door replaced after the old one warped and stopped sealing properly. The new door is solid, the fitting is neat and they took the old door away. Got our FENSA certificate in the post a few days later. Exactly what you want - no fuss, job done."
David H. — Pinhoe, Exeter
"Bi-fold doors fitted to the rear of our extension in St Thomas. The difference to the kitchen is incredible - it feels like a completely different room when they're open onto the garden. The team were tidy, professional and explained everything clearly throughout. Top marks."
Claire W. — St Thomas, Exeter
What To Do In Newton Abbot
Newton Abbot is more than just a market town - a National Trust manor, a racecourse and one of south Devon's more interesting historic houses make it worth spending some time.
Bradley Manor
A medieval manor house in the care of the National Trust, sitting on the edge of Newton Abbot in woodland above the Lemon valley. The house dates from the 15th century and has been very little altered - it gives a genuine sense of what a late-medieval domestic building looked like, without the usual heritage industry presentation.

Newton Abbot Racecourse
One of the main National Hunt racecourses in the West Country, running a full season of evening and afternoon meetings from spring through to autumn. It's a relaxed venue with good views of Dartmoor from the grandstand and a proper local following - worth going if you're not usually a racing person.

Forde House
A Jacobean mansion in the centre of Newton Abbot, built in the early 17th century and now owned by Teignbridge District Council. It's notable as the house where William of Orange stayed in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution. The building is used for council functions but the grounds are accessible to the public.

Can you replace Crittall steel frame windows in Newton Abbot?
Yes - this is one of the most common enquiries we receive from Newton Abbot's interwar housing. Original steel frames are now approaching a century old and well past the point where repair makes sense. We replace them with uPVC or aluminium casement windows - uPVC for cost reasons, aluminium if you want a slimmer profile closer to the original Crittall look.
Do Newton Abbot properties need planning permission for window replacement?
Most like-for-like replacements don't. Exceptions include listed buildings and properties within Newton Abbot's conservation area. We'll confirm your property's status at the free survey and advise accordingly.
Is aluminium better than uPVC for replacing Crittall windows?
Aluminium has a slimmer frame profile that's closer to the original Crittall look, which can suit interwar semis better aesthetically. It costs more than uPVC but the thermal performance is equivalent. uPVC costs less and is the more common choice. We'll advise on the best option for your specific property at the survey.
Do you cover the villages around Newton Abbot?
Yes - we cover Kingsteignton, Bovey Tracey, Totnes and the wider south Devon area. Give us a call if you're unsure whether your location is within our coverage.
