About Window Installers Exeter
We started out as a small fitting team working mainly around St Thomas and Heavitree, and grew steadily through word of mouth. That was over 15 years ago. Since then we've completed more than 1,400 installations across Exeter and the surrounding area - everything from a single misted unit in a 1970s bungalow in Whipton to a full secondary glazing fit-out in a Grade II listed Georgian townhouse near the Cathedral. The work hasn't changed much, but we've learned a lot about what Exeter's housing stock throws at you.
Exeter isn't a simple city to work in. The Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Heavitree and St Thomas have irregular opening sizes and lime mortar reveals that need careful handling. The 1960s and 70s estates out towards Pinhoe and Wonford often have non-standard frame dimensions that mean frames have to be made to measure rather than off-the-shelf. The newer builds out near Cranbrook need precise fitting to maintain the thermal envelope. And the listed properties in Topsham and the city centre require a completely different approach - secondary glazing, listed building consent, working within what the local planning authority will allow. We've done all of it.
We're based on Topsham Road and operate across the whole of Exeter and into the surrounding towns including Exmouth, Topsham, Crediton and beyond. Every job starts with a proper site visit - we don't quote off photos or measurements you send us. We come to you, we measure every opening, we check for any structural or planning considerations, and we give you a written itemised quote. No pressure, no follow-up calls every three days. If you want to go ahead, great. If not, that's fine too.
Why New Windows Make A Difference In Exeter
Exeter averages around 800mm of rainfall a year - noticeably higher than the UK average of 680mm - and the winters here are damp rather than cold in the way that, say, the Midlands or the north get cold. That sustained damp is hard on window frames. Timber rots at the joints. Seals fail. Single-glazed units fitted before 2002 (when building regulations required double glazing for replacements) are now well past their useful life in most cases.
Properties near the Exe estuary - particularly in Topsham and the lower parts of the city - also pick up salt-laden air from the river, which accelerates corrosion on older aluminium frames and speeds up seal failure on units that aren't adequately protected. For those homes, the choice of frame profile and glazing unit spec matters more than it does further inland.
- ✓ Lower heating bills - A-rated double glazing cuts heat loss through windows significantly. In a typical Exeter semi with single glazing, windows can account for 25-30% of total heat loss.
- ✓ Less condensation and damp - Modern sealed units with warm-edge spacer bars dramatically reduce condensation on the inside face of the glass, which in turn reduces the mould risk around frames.
- ✓ Reduced road noise - Exeter's busier routes - Topsham Road, Heavitree Road, Pinhoe Road - are noisy. Double or acoustic glazing makes a real difference in properties fronting main roads.
- ✓ Better security - Modern frames come with multi-point locking as standard. Many of the older windows we replace in Exeter still have single-point catches that offer very little resistance.
- ✓ Conservation area compliance - For properties in Exeter's conservation areas, we can specify products that satisfy the council's design guidance while still meeting current thermal performance requirements.
- ✓ Improved sale value and conveyancing - FENSA-registered installations are recorded on a national database. If you sell without this documentation, your solicitor will flag it and buyers may request a retention.
Our Window Installation Process
From first contact to final handover, here is exactly what happens when you book with us.
Free site visit
We come to you, measure every opening, check for structural issues and confirm whether your property falls within a conservation area or is listed. No charge, no obligation.
Written quote
You receive a full itemised quote in writing - every window listed individually, all materials, labour and waste removal included. No verbal-only pricing that changes when the invoice arrives.
Frames manufactured
Profiles are cut and welded to the exact dimensions of your openings and delivered direct to site. Made-to-measure rather than trimmed-to-fit means a cleaner, tighter result every time.
Old frames removed
We remove existing frames carefully, protecting your reveals and internal plasterwork throughout. All rubble and packaging is disposed of - you don't need to arrange a skip.
New frames fitted and sealed
Frames are shimmed level, mechanically fixed, foam-filled for draught-proofing and siliconed inside and out. We don't leave gaps that will admit water six months later.
Glazing units installed
Double or triple glazed units are fitted into the frames, beaded in and sealed. Hardware - handles, hinges, restrictor stays - is fitted, adjusted and tested before we move on.
Inspection & certificate
We walk through every window with you on completion. Once you're satisfied, your FENSA certificate and written guarantee are issued and handed over. Job done.
Our Guarantee
Every window and door we install is backed by a 10-year workmanship guarantee. That covers the fitting itself - how the frame sits in the opening, how it's sealed, how the hardware operates. If anything we've done causes a problem within ten years, we come back and fix it.
The glazing units themselves also carry a 10-year manufacturer's guarantee against seal failure and condensation between the panes. Both guarantees are issued in writing on completion of the job, alongside your FENSA certificate. When you come to sell, your solicitor will ask for these documents - we make sure you have everything you need.
The guarantee only stands if the product is correctly installed. That's why we don't rush surveys, we don't cut corners on preparation, and we don't send crews who don't know what they're doing. The guarantee is only as good as the quality of the work behind it.

"Around 6 in 10 enquiries we receive in Exeter are from homeowners who didn't realise their windows were failing building regulation standards - often because single glazing was fitted before the rules changed in 2002."

Window Styles & Frame Materials
The right window type depends on your property style, planning constraints and what you want from the installation. Here's a quick guide to the main options we fit across Exeter.
Casement Windows
The most common window type across Exeter's housing stock. Side-hung or top-hung, suitable for most property styles, available in uPVC, aluminium or timber-effect profiles.
View casement options →
Sash Windows
Common in Exeter's Victorian and Edwardian terraces. Modern sash replacements can replicate the original look while meeting current thermal standards - important in conservation areas like St Leonard's and Heavitree.

Bay & Bow Windows
A prominent feature on many of Exeter's Victorian and Edwardian properties. Bay replacements require precise angled frame manufacture and careful attention to the cill and reveals - work we carry out regularly across the city.

Bi-fold & Patio Doors
Increasingly popular in Exeter extensions and rear garden projects. Slim aluminium frames, large glazed panels and minimal sightlines when open. Available in a wide range of RAL colours.

Three recent jobs from different parts of Exeter, showing the range of work we take on.
Heavitree, Exeter
Victorian Terrace - 8 Sash Windows
A mid-terrace house on a residential street off Heavitree Road. The property had its original timber sash windows - some dating from the 1890s - which had deteriorated to the point where several wouldn't close properly and two had frames that had rotted at the cills. The street sits within a conservation area, so we specified slim-profile uPVC sash replacements in white, designed to replicate the original run-through sash detail externally. All eight windows were replaced over two days. The customer had been putting the job off for years due to concerns about what was permitted - once we confirmed the product choice with the council, the decision was straightforward.
Cranbrook, Exeter
New Build Extension - Bi-fold Doors
A recently built property in Cranbrook where the owners had added a rear kitchen extension and wanted bi-fold doors to open the space onto the garden. The opening was 3.6 metres wide, which we spanned with a four-panel aluminium bi-fold in anthracite grey. The critical part of this job was coordinating with the structural engineer to ensure the steel lintel above the opening was sized correctly before the doors were manufactured and delivered. We project-managed that process and fitted the doors once the lintel was confirmed. The extension now functions as the main living and dining space for the family.
Topsham, Exeter
Listed Property - Secondary Glazing Throughout
A Grade II listed cottage in Topsham with seven single-glazed sash windows on the front and side elevations. Listed building consent ruled out frame replacement. We fitted slim secondary glazing panels to the inner face of all seven windows, using brush-seal perimeter seals to maximise draught-proofing without compromising the ability to open the primary sashes for ventilation. The result was a significant reduction in draughts and heat loss - the owners reported the house was noticeably warmer the following winter without an increase in heating spend. The installation is also reversible, which satisfied the listed building officer's requirements.
What Our Customers In Exeter Say
Genuine feedback from homeowners across Exeter and the surrounding area
"Had all eight windows replaced in our 1970s house in Heavitree. The team arrived on time, laid dust sheets throughout and were done in two days. Biggest difference is the warmth - no more draught across the living room floor in January. Really happy with the whole job."
Karen T. — Heavitree, Exeter
"I got three quotes. These were the only company who actually came out and measured properly before pricing - the others just asked for the number of windows and gave me a number over the phone. The price was competitive and the job was done cleanly. Would use again without hesitation."
Mark R. — Topsham
"Secondary glazing fitted throughout our listed cottage near the Cathedral Close. They knew the planning restrictions before I'd even finished explaining and recommended exactly the right product. The noise reduction from the road is noticeable immediately. Brilliant from start to finish."
Sarah M. — St Leonard's, Exeter
"Composite front door replaced after the old one warped and stopped sealing properly. The new door is solid, the fitting is neat and they took the old door away. Got our FENSA certificate in the post a few days later. Exactly what you want - no fuss, job done."
David H. — Pinhoe, Exeter
"Bi-fold doors fitted to the rear of our extension in St Thomas. The difference to the kitchen is incredible - it feels like a completely different room when they're open onto the garden. The team were tidy, professional and explained everything clearly throughout. Top marks."
Claire W. — St Thomas, Exeter
How Much Does Window Installation Cost In Exeter?
Costs vary quite a bit depending on the window type, frame material, glazing spec and the condition of the existing reveals. As a rough guide, a standard casement window replacement in uPVC runs from around £400 to £700 per window supply and fit - including the glazing unit, hardware and sealing. Bay windows, sash windows and larger picture windows cost more because of the additional frame complexity and installation time.
For doors, a composite front door with a new frame fitted typically costs between £800 and £1,800 depending on the door style, glazing and locking specification. Bi-fold doors start from around £2,500 for a standard 2.4m opening and increase with width and the number of panels required.
The only way to get an accurate price for your property is a site visit - opening sizes across Exeter's housing stock vary considerably, and the condition of the existing frames and reveals affects how much preparation work is needed before fitting. All our surveys are free and all quotes are provided in writing, fully itemised with no hidden charges. If you want a rough sense of what your job might cost before we visit, see our window installation cost guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does window installation take in Exeter?
Most standard jobs take one to three days. A single window replacement is often done inside a morning. A full house of eight to ten windows typically takes two days with a team of two fitters. We'll give you a realistic time estimate when we survey the job, so you can plan around it.
Do I need planning permission to replace windows in Exeter?
For most Exeter homes, like-for-like replacement doesn't need planning permission. If your property is listed or sits within a conservation area - which includes parts of Topsham, the city centre, sections of Heavitree and St Leonard's - you'll need to check with Exeter City Council before proceeding. We can advise you on this during your free survey and, in many cases, point you towards products that are pre-approved for conservation area use.
What types of windows do you install?
We install uPVC windows, aluminium windows, timber-effect windows, sash windows, casement windows, tilt-and-turn windows and bay windows. We also carry out secondary glazing installations for listed properties and conservation area homes where full replacement isn't permitted. All frame types are available in a wide range of colours and finishes.
Are your installations FENSA registered?
Yes. All our window and door replacements comply with current building regulations and we provide the relevant FENSA certificate on completion. This is on record nationally and is essential documentation for your conveyancing paperwork when you sell. Properties without this evidence of compliance can cause delays or requests for retention at point of sale.
What's the difference between double and triple glazing?
Double glazing uses two panes of glass with an insulating gas - usually argon - between them. Triple glazing adds a third pane for better thermal performance but at greater weight and cost. For most Exeter homes, A-rated double glazing is more than adequate and the better value option. Triple glazing is worth considering for particularly exposed elevations, north-facing rooms or properties very close to busy roads where acoustic performance is the priority.
Do you work on listed buildings and conservation area properties?
Yes. We have experience working on listed properties and buildings in Exeter's conservation areas, including the city centre, Topsham and parts of St Leonard's. For these properties we typically recommend secondary glazing - an inner panel fitted to the existing frame that adds thermal and acoustic performance without altering the external appearance. We can advise on what is and isn't permitted for your specific property and help you navigate the listed building consent process if required.
